About NES
NES founded
Nes artist residency was founded in the beginning of March 2008 in the town of Skagastönd and the first artists arrived in June. An international artist residency, Nes provides artists with a workspace and living quarters during their stay in Skagaströnd. The town was a trading and fishing town for centuries. With the fishing industry decreasing in the last decade, the former fishing plant at Fjörubraut 8 has now found a new role housing the Nes artist residency studios. The living quarters are in five apartment houses and row-houses each shared by 2-5 artists.
Main Goals
The main goal of the residency is to provide an opportunity for international exchange, where professional artists in all media including writers and performing artists are given the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and possibly collaborate.
Open Call for applications
As of January 2009 applications to Nes artist residency may be submitted at any time (open call). The residency is for monthly periods ranging from 1-6 months. The applications will be reviewed in cooperation with SÍM – The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists. In 2009 the residency will expand from hosting about 5-9 artists a month to hosting about 10-15 artists, planning to expand in the next years to include up to 20-25 artists at the time.
Housing and studio facilities
Artists are provided with a studio space and a private bedroom. Residents live in apartments in five modest comfortable houses and row-houses all including separate bedrooms and a living room, bathroom, kitchen and laundry facilities shared by all the residents.
The studios are open studios located in a former fishing plant. Each room gets a space about 12m2 (120 sqf). Each studio space is equipped with a table-top, two saw horses, stool, chair, shelf unit and a lamp. Residents will have to cover the cost of travel, food, art materials and possible shipping of art back home.
Residency fee
The residency fee per month in 2010 is from € 550-900, see details in application. We ask all artists to pay the residency fee for Nes at the latest three months prior to your arrival in Skagaströnd. This arrangement will help us with placements of artists and give us ample time to fill your post in case you find that you are unable to come to Nes after all.
