Trips

Nes artist residency does not plan any regular trips from Skagaströnd but sometimes we go on a shorter excursion or hikes in the area for the day. Longer trips will have to be planned by the residents themselves, by bus or car.

In Skagaströnd and around the country there are many thermal springs and swimming-pools, including the Blue Lagoon and the local Skagaströnd swimming-pool (this one only open in summer, due to a lack of thermal water). These are a definite “must see” if you are traveling. So do bring swim-trunks/suits.

Whale watching is mostly in the summer but some have trips all the way into October. From Húsavík there is
http://www.gentlegiants.is/ and also from Akureyri and Dalvík a bit closer to Skagaströnd.

A good travel guide to Northern Iceland can be found on:   http://www.nordurland.is/
The tourist board of Iceland can send you brochures but you can also check their information website on http://www.icetourist.is/ . The cheapest accommodation in Iceland if you are traveling around is “Farmhouse accommodation” listed on their site. Most of them have both sleeping bag accommodations and made up beds, which is slightly more expensive.

In the winter from about November to March/April the ski area is open. It is on the way to Skagafjörður/Sauðárkrókur. It takes about 25-30 minutes to get there by car. The ski area is very small and the slopes short, but make for a day of easy skiing. In the season 2008-2009 the prices for ski rentals is IKR 2400 and the lift ticket is IKR 1200.

For more information in English about the area, museums to visit and things to do the website of the Selasetur – Seal museum is a very good one: http://nat.is/Museums/seal_center.htm
