We here at Nes Artist Residency want to mark our two year anniversary by hosting an exhibition with artwork by former artists of Nes. The exhibition will take place during the Country Days festival in the middle of August. The Country Days is a 3 day festival in Skagaströnd that was started by Hallbjörn Hjartarson the Country king of Iceland. This festival attracts over 1000 people from all over Iceland.
We hope that you where inspired by your stay here in Skagaströnd and are willing to share that with us. In order for this event to be successful we are hoping that many of Nes artists will be able to provide artwork for the show.
The town of Skagaströnd is interested in starting an art collection. You can choose if you would like to donate your artwork to the town of Skagaströnd or we can return it when the show is finished.
The artwork should be around 8 ½ by 11 inches or 21 by 30 cm in size in any medium.
If you are interested in sending us your artwork, feel free to include approximately 50 business cards along with your piece. Please send your artwork postmarked 26th of July 2010 to the following address:
Nes Artist Residency
Thank you for your cooperation in this effort to showcase the diversity of artists that have stayed here at Nes in the last couple of years.
Please let us know if you are interested in participating or if you have any questions or concerns.
We wish to remind our visitors and potential visitors to Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd that day-to-day life in Iceland carries on as usual.
There is however a volcanic eruption on the south coast. Because of that we want to stress that it has not made any impact on our lives, not here in Skagaströnd or most other parts of the country. Icelanders’ daily life is proceeding quite normally. The only exception is in a very specific area on the South coast.
Even though the eruption in the glacier is relatively small, airborne volcanic ash has dispersed over a wide area and disrupted air travel in Europe. As strange as it sounds airports in Iceland, Keflavik and Reykjavik, have not been struck by the ash like those in Europe.
So our lives here in Iceland have not changed in any way due to the volcanic eruption. Nevertheless we wish to warn you of exaggerated news reports on the eruption.
If you are not convinced or you have any doubt in your mind about your visit to Skagastrond, please send us an e-mail and we’ll answer a.s.a.p.
This map shows you where we are in relation to the volcano.
Below are links that are regularly updated on the current volcanic situation in Iceland. This is a link to online Icelandic newspapers, the Engilsh edition:

Come to Kantrybaer for a night of dancing.
Komið í Kántrýbæ á danskvöld
The night will begin with a workshop, a chance to learn/review a number of social or partner dances; some familiar, some classic, some new. After gaining this new expertise, the music will play on and we will dance our hearts out.
The workshop will be lead by choreographer, Anna Marie Shogren, with accompanying installation by sculptor, Margaret Coleman, both Brooklyn based Nes residents.
Kvöldið byrjar á námskeiði, þar fá allir tækifæri til að rifja upp og læra nokkra samkvæmisdansa, suma kannist þið við, aðrir eru klassískir en einnig verða kenndir nýjir dansar. Eftir að allir eru búnir að æfa sig verður tónlist spiluð og við munum dansa úr okkur hjörtun.
Due to cancellations we now have free spaces in May 2010.
Applications to Nes Artist Residency may be submitted at any time (open call). The residency is for monthly periods ranging from 1-6 months. Applications will be reviewed as soon as possible, or at the latest 3-5 weeks after your submission. We will let you know of the committee’s decision as soon as possible after that date.
Right now there is a last minute call for applications for May. We are also still taking applications for the rest of the year 2010.
