Nes Artist Residency is situated in the small and remote north Iceland town of Skagaströnd and was established by the municipality in 2008 in response to the closure of the fishing based industry in the town. The municipality looked for ways to help their small town deal with these changes and bring new enthusiasm in to the community. Since then Nes has matured from a fledging artist residency, largely financed by the Skagaströnd municipality to being self-sustainable, professional and a highly respected residency within the international arena.
2018 sees us celebrating our 10th birthday and we have invited 10 Alumni to share this occasion with us, who will be sharing their work via exhibitions, performances and workshops during the month of June.
During the course of the last 10 years Nes has received over 730 artists from approximately 45 countries to our northern shore. Unlike tourists who rarely stay more than a couple of days in any one place, our international artists reside for 1-6 months, immersing themselves into the community, creating meaningful, multi-layered cultural exchanges with other artists and local residents. Our artists are not only able to enhance their creative practice as ordinary citizens by experiencing life in a new location; but are also international ambassadors of their own culture which they share with the community through their daily encounters.
