Artist in Residence – Garrett Hayes

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Garrett Hayes is an American artist currently living in Athens, Georgia, USA. Using found objects and assembled treasure, Garrett says: “I collect many things; remnants of time, nature and life. These objects are then united in sculpture and space. I collect things specific to my desire that these artifacts live on, but in a new context of my choosing. Without me, these items would sit on shelves, end up in a landfill, rot away completely or some other variation on the fate of discarded objects. I see a new life in the unwanted and consider myself their savior. I suspend, cut, burn, stain, paint, sand, or perhaps do nothing. I stack, attach, drape, stretch, weave and alter in hopes of creating unified splendour.”

Artist in Residence – Georgina Campbell

RESIDENT ARTIST Georgina Campbell from Australia, talks about her work: “ I am a photographic artist with an interest in exploring the photograph as a sculptural object, building my own cameras and experimenting with landscapes using both digital and analogue lens based media. I am interested in exploring the concepts of the furthest possible distance one can travel, of what is going on in different parts of the world at the exact same time, and time-lapse video as a form of time travel. I plan to use this residency to collect visual data for future screen landscapes, video works and continue my experiments with digital video technologies, webcams and video / GIF works. ”

Artist in Residence – Margaret Hester

October ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Margaret Hester (USA) shares ideas about her work:  “My photographic sculptures of abstracted landscapes explore the complex world of the human perception & experience, while aiming to challenge the traditional ways of viewing photographs. Through the active participation of the viewer, the work is ever shifting, elevating questions about what one identifies as reality. ”

Artist in Residence – Amber Reed

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Amber Reed is a visual artist from South Florida working with paint, drawing and embroidery. She completed her bachelor of fine arts with a concentration in painting, at Florida Atlantic University. In past work she has focused on the anatomy of humans/animals and their interaction with the landscape. Here at NES she is working with imagery of deceased animals specifically from Iceland. She is exploring our relationship to our animals; how we view, treat and value them.  Checkout her website.

Artist in Residence – Karli Campitelli

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Karli Campitelli is an abstract painter and recent BFA graduate from Ottawa, Canada. Her work explores the relationships of colour through abstract forms using carefully chosen colour palettes to create blurred landscapes that give a sense of reflection. Certain colour combinations are employed to evoke emotion or personal association in the viewer. Her process consists of brushwork, scraping, wood burning, and carving. This is meant to create depth, causing engaging juxtapositions of varying opacity, transparency, and saturation. The result is an abstracted scene with an atmospheric quality and a centrality on colour. She is strongly influenced by nature, colour theory, and the Abstract Expressionism movement.

Artist in Residence – Amber Brandsma

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Amber Brandsma is a Rotterdam based fashion designer and in 2012 she launched the fashion label Nieuwe Meuk, in cooperation with spatial designer Els Kuijt. The already existing archive of clothing-designs and patterns, are the inspiration for Nieuwe Meuk and they use them as a library for the Nieuwe Meuk items.
At NES Artist Residency Amber is focused on the research about how she can make a contribution to the rethinking of fashion, by approaching it from a philosophical and literary perspective. The main questions are; What is left, if you remove the image in fashion? Which kind of interpretations and translations will be made? Amber hopes that this research, once completed in written word, will open up new forms and explorations for her designs.
More information can be found on Amber’s  website.
