Current Artist in Residence – ALEXANDRA ELLIOTT

IMG_2332-chosenAlexandra has been blogging about her experience.
“Today I will meet the new July artists and all the other artists I hope. I’m living in a home with nine of them. I awoke early and had a quiet morning to myself. Most of the artists here at the Nes Residency share an open concept space in an old fishing warehouse. My studio is the community hall and it is only shared by me and my busy mind. I look forward to entering the space and making it my own.IMG_1958 This process generally takes me two to three days. I have to stare at the geometry of the room and become adjusted to the level of privacy, aspects of light, areas where I can create movement, and where I’m going to set certain things up.IMG_2191-chosenThen I often do one improvisation and shortly afterwards find myself in a cocoon in a cozy corner somewhere shifting nothing but my eyes. During this cocoon phase I feel overwhelmed, paralyzed, and worried that I’m a failure. All you loving worriers can relax, it’s just a process. Because then I emerge as a beautiful butterfly and prance around the room creating masterpiece after masterpiece!!! Just kidding. That’s what it looked like when I was four and we danced around with long colourful silk scarves.”

George Spica – Exhibition

GEORGE SPICA – Tue 26 July, 19.00-21.00 in the Freezer

My name is George Spica, an American artist working in sculpture, installation, and performance. My work is concerned with the performative potential of the body, as well as, more recently, synthetic projections of that potential through geographical space. I find industry to be an incredibly beautiful and straightforward way of looking at the physical expressions, and desires, of the human body. By this notion, my practice aims to elucidate the romance present in mechanics and functional aesthetics by creating distilled, protracted experiences thereof.

Tuesday night’s show in the Nes Freezer (7-9pm) will be an installation comprising various sculptures and digital video projections, all works made during my time at the Nes Residency. Each work was made in relation to the next; the products of an ongoing practice exploring the romantic qualities of industrial materials. The pieces on display are, in a broad sense, material compositions belonging to many industrial and mechanical lineages brought into the context of a gallery for the sake of examining physical desire through objective analysis.

Current Artist in Residence – Leah Pantea

While here at NES, Leah Pantea has been enamored with paradoxes and has been exploring that concept in her work. She layers on thin wash-like layers of oil paint onto paper-creating a dynamic abstract landscape of geometric structures and organic forms, only to paint over everything with layers of white paint. This process allows shadows and hints of what was to peek through, causing the viewer to both imagine it full of marks and also entirely empty. Leah will be creating at NES through September, then continue home to San Diego, California. See more of her work at

Current Artist in Residence – Addoley Dzegede

ADDOLEY DZEGEDE is a Ghanaian-American interdisciplinary artist currently based in St Louis, Missouri. Her practice is idea-driven and mixed media, investigating notions of belonging, home, location and identity. Most recently, she has been interested in textile processes and is creating natural dyes from plant materials found in and around Skagaströnd.

Current Artist in Residence – Anne Marie Michaud

ANNE MARIE MICHAUD is a multi-disciplinary, studio artist based in Montreal. Through drawing, painting, sculpture and video, she continually explores themes related to the human body, more specifically investigating the body as a pathway to understanding not only her own identity and life experiences, but also as the primary means to accessing the world outside of ourselves. The principal subject of her research at Nes has been teeth and the parallels that can be drawn between them and the landscape. With local materials, she has used drawing and sculpture as a means to create a dialogue between the idiosyncratic nature of teeth and the topographical and geological aspects of the Skagi Peninsula.

Current Artist in Residence – Sandi Anderson

SANDI ANDERSON is here at Nes for 3 months: June – August. She began working out in the landscape in 2009 and it took over her practice in 2010. She frequently battles adverse weather conditions, which dictate an intuitive response on a small scale.

More recently she has been making monotypes. This work is proving more abstract in nature, however it is permeated with the form and colour palette of distilling years. In contrast to her figurative painting, she approaches the plate with an open mind and let’s her subconscious take over. Ink is applied to the plate then disturbed and removed at will. The outcome can never be predicted. The removal of control is addictive and the process is proving an important counterpoint to her painting practice.Website:
