How easy is it to access art supplies in Skagaströnd?
Nes has no funding to provide art supplies. We do have a small storage room full of odds and ends left behind by previous artists. We recommend bringing all specific materials with you, or sending them before your arrival. There are also art stores in Reykjavik: you can make an order with them and have it delivered to Nes, or stop on your way through. Click here for more details on customs and sending mail to Nes.
Do you have internet access?
Yes, there is wi-fi in the studio. In Iceland, wifi customers pay in volume of downloaded data. This means high traffic activity such as downloading media and watching youtube greatly adds to our monthly bill. In order to keep our residency fee low, we ask that all artists limit this kind of data traffic while using the studio connection. There is no internet access in the apartments, but you can loan a USB 3G key from us for a refundable deposit of 10 000 ISK. The USB internet requires that you have your own laptop and you will need to pre-pay as you go. We use the phone company síminn. Generally to keep up to date with emails, facebook, 1 GB of data will work, for skype it’s better to budget a little more 5 GB.
Which living expenses are artists responsible for? What is an average budget per month?
The residency fee covers your accommodation and studio space. All other costs are the responsibility of the artist. It is good to budget with a minimum of 7,500 -10,000 ISK per week for food in Skagaströnd. Otherwise all expenses are dependent on what kind of experience you are looking for. It is good to budget for trips out of town and exploring Iceland.
What kind of clothing should I bring?
The best attitude for Iceland is to be prepared for anything. This means layers, and good basics for both warm and cold weather in the summer. And lots of layering and cold weather gear for a stay in the winter.
Do you offer residencies in the winter?
Nes operates all year round. We accept applications for 2 or more months, beginning the 1st weekday of the month and ending the last day of the preferred months.
Are grants or any other financial assistance available?
Nes does not have a funding board or body attached to it. We do not offer scholarships or stipends to artists, unless we have a program running for it. It is advised you seek funding in your own country, most Icelandic funding is especially for Icelandic projects or artists.
