Leif Weigel (they/them) is a writer and fiber artist from the farmland of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. At NES, Leif has been researching and exploring ancestral methods of processing wool, plants, and found objects washed up on the shore or strewn along roadsides. They are currently experimenting with local plant dyes (i.e. crowberries, sea rust, dandelion) and spinning (and dropping) using a drop spindle. They find slow, process driven work a refreshing contrast from the convenience and production driven society. Weaving and knitting has felt surprisingly familiar to their hands— as if the spirit of their grandmother (an avid quilter), and ancestors are working the fiber along with them. In their writing, Leif is currently working on a middle grade novel featuring a 12 year old gender non conforming protagonist who is determined to protect their backyard from development of a shopping center. It focuses on themes of eco-anxiety, intergenerational friendships, neurodiverse experiences, and deep connection with the natural world.
