NES operates an open-plan shared studio,  located in the old fish factory. The main area is approximately 16x11metres and is divided into 10-12 spaces. It is a fluid space and artists can shape their individual workspace to suit the way they work.

A modest selection of tools are available in the studio’s storeroom, including a couple of easels, drills, saws, a jigsaw and basic tools like hammers, pliers and screw drivers.  We also have a small room of odd art materials which previous artists have left behind that may be used by all residents. Specific art materials are best brought with you.

Within the NES studio is the “Freezer” space approximately 8×5.5metres; it is a wonderfully versatile space. It can be reserved by artists on a daily basis, and also used for exhibitions. It is a particularly good space for projection or light based work (once closed, it’s almost completely dark) as well as brainstorming installations and performances. We regularly use the space each month for artist talks. Artists have used The Freezer for performances, sound installation, sculpture, and meetings.

In addition to the workspace and storeroom, the Nes studio also has a kitchen, WC, and small library. Each artist is provided with a bench/table, stool, light and shelving.  As the studio is a shared open plan, we ask that artists use low toxic materials and are respectful of other artists working in the same space. The studio can be a little noisy at times and we suggest you bring headphones to use when you want to focus more intently.

Whilst the open plan studio at Fjörubraut 8 is our main studio area and all artists have 24/7access to this, we can provide some specialist spaces for writers, dancers and sound artists/musicians. See the drop-down menu for more information.
