An air hostess In Singapore in the early 70s when air travel was glamorous, to running a restaurant in Perth, winning an award as chef, to studying creative writing and film production, to working as a sound recordist and executive producer, to founding a charity for youth empowerment in Kenya, to completing a law degree and setting herself up as an entertainment lawyer, culminating with an Order of Australia award for her contribution to various communities over many years…Joan sees all this as a tapestry of her love for the incongruities in life. This eight-week experience at NES, in the midst of other international residents, surrounded by the unending beauty of Icelandic summer light and landscape in Skagaströnd is the prize. “Some deep listening is occurring here” she says as she draws, paints and writes, doing what she loves for no one but herself.
