Defne Çizakça is a Turkish/Dutch writer, editor and teacher based in Istanbul. She specialises in fairy tales and magical realism, exploring the psyche through archetypes.

At NES, Defne has worked on a series of illustrations and a fairy tale about Þordis, the 10th century prophetess/witch/fortune teller from Skagaströnd. She also ran “Fortunes for Stories,” the first leg of a collaborative storytelling project. It is based on a simple exchange: a reading of your fortune from the coffee cup (the traditional, Turkish way), in return for a story (a supernatural one from Iceland). She hopes the results will turn into a new book of short stories. You can find out more about Defne and her writing on her website.
